TARLEE is a strong supporter of the slow fashion movement and ethical fashion. Many our independent designers due to their smaller size are much closer to their production process and supply chain than bigger retailers. When we select and invite our designers, we ensure that they produce quality pieces designed to have long life cycles rather than short-lived and trend-driven, throwaway items. Our ethical tags highlight to our customers the sustainable and ethical credentials of our designer’s collections and what they have purchased. We challenge the idea that fashion is disposable.

   FAIRLY TRADED

Fairly Traded is about providing fair prices, decent working conditions and sustainable opportunities to communities in the developing world. We work with designers that adhere to fair business practices enabling small local producers to have more control of their livelihoods and empowering communities to prosper.

   HANDMADE

Skilled artisans create these handmade products in their studios using traditional techniques. This helps to maintain artisan skill sets that would otherwise be lost to mass production of the fast fashion industry. With the quality workmanship used, these items are unique by definition.

   MADE IN EU

Brands whose production process is located in the EU are actively supporting communities, maintaining skills and offering employment opportunities in a sector of the European economy.

   MADE IN UK

The British heritage movement has meant that the Made in the UK tag is recognised for quality clothing that is ethically made and designed for longevity.
Since the 90s, many manufacturing jobs have been outsourced overseas, leading to a decline of the textile industry in the UK. The Made in UK pieces on TARLEE are usually manufactured in small studios in the UK keeping local industry and the British economy vibrant.

By manufacturing in their home country, fashion brands can reduce the amount of shipping and transport involved in the supply chains for their products, reducing the carbon footprint of this part of their work.

   ORGANIC

Organic refers to pieces where the raw materials are grown with natural fertilizers and are free from toxic chemicals. The production process has a minimal negative impact on the environment as the pesticides that are commonly used when growing “conventional” natural fibres increasingly threaten the environment, local communities and wildlife. Individuals with allergies and chemical sensitivity may benefit from organic clothing, as conventional materials may also retain harmful toxic residues.

   SUSTAINABLE

There are many definitions of sustainable fashion. At TARLEE, we think sustainability is a broad term that encompasses many different aspects and designers who focus on any one of these should be recognised and accredited. We also want our customers to clearly be able to see and appreciate the consideration that has gone into collections.

The Sustainable tag is used if any of the following applies:

  • Pieces that are made of fibres treated with natural or AZO-free dyes
  • Large amounts of fertilisers, pesticides and water resources are not part of the product’s production cycle

  • A conservation of water and energy in the processing of raw materials and throughout the production process

  • Use of upcycled materials which gives new life to existing fabrics

  • Use of environmentally friendly materials which have a reduced negative environmental impact e.g. lyocell, cupro

  • Vegan pieces are made from textiles that are animal friendly and not a by-product of the leather, wool and fur trade

Becoming a more conscious consumer involves reflection and asking lots of questions. At TARLEE, our mission is to provide an insight into our designer’s attitudes and methods of working and how pieces have been created. We want our customers to discover independent designers who share their values.
We only work with designers who produce in safe and healthy environments and ask all our designers where products are manufactured before we featuring their collection. We are also continuously re-assessing our criteria and tags to ensure that they are accurate and detailed enough for our customers.
