Aurore, tell us a bit about yourself..
I spent my childhood in a small village in Northern France. I grew up surrounded by nature, spending hours dreaming and wandering in the countryside, forging an ever curious and imaginative mind.
After graduating, I gained experience with Karine Arabian, Guy Laroche and Corpus Christi design studios, where I was in charge of accessories, Jewellery, printed fabrics and embroidery. I also worked as a graphic designer and as a photo stylist for fashion magazines, before launching my own brand in 2010.
Today, after 18 years in the countryside and 10 years in Paris, I live in Nantes in a house with a garden and get the best of the two worlds.
Why did you name your brand Mademoiselle Felee?
This is a tribute to The Eiffel tower, my first source of inspiration. I like the elegant side of “Mademoiselle” and the casual side of “Felee”. “Fêlée” is a double entente, meaning “cracked” and “loony” but is also here linked to the Eiffel Tower as in French, “Fêlée” is the sound made by the two reversed syllables of “Eiffel".
Why should TARLEE customers check out your collection?
If you want to wear an elegant piece inspired by a monument they like or a souvenir of a city trip.
What you have a creative block, what do you do to spur ideas?
I choose a monument that I want to pay tribute to, travel to the city where it is and take lots of photos.
I let things rest a few months, then, looking at my pictures, some shapes reveal themselves which can be translated into jewellery. I draw sketches for necklaces, rings, bracelets, headbands and earrings and then select the best designs. I draw them meticulously on my computer, choose their thickness, and send the files to the laser cutter. When I receive the pieces, I grind them down and send them to the Gilder to finish them into fine gold, silver, black or bronze. Finally, I assemble all the pieces to create my jewellery. Each new collection is a long process...
What is your proudest moment for you and the brand?
When I won a prize for my collection from a famous fashion press journalist for my first trade fair appearance.
Where is your favourite place to get away from it all?
I love go to the sea and listen to the sound of the waves.
Do you have a quote that you live by?
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall" - Confucius.
